The Holodomor is considered one of the greatest national catastrophes to affect the Ukrainian nation in modern history where millions of inhabitants of Ukraine and other parts of the then Soviet Union died of starvation from 1932-33 in an unprecedented peacetime catastrophe. In November of 2008, the Arlington Sister City Association hosted a film screening of a documentary entitled "Harvest of Despair" about this tragedy. The screening was followed by a discussion with children of survivors of the genocide. The event concluded with a candle lighting ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the events on the plaza outside of Arlington`s Shirlington LIbrary. These are a few photos from the event.
